Fresh from her recent tours with the Jesus and Mary Chain, INVSN and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, and performing two consecutive years at the SXSW Festival in Texas, Berlin's dark starlight Laura Carbone returns with a dreamy new LP, Empty Sea, the inaugural release of Aporia's new imprint, FUTURE SHOCK RECORDS.
Part Sonic Youth, part Mazzy Star, Laura Carbone's music could be interpreted as a function of the contrast between the rough, industrial city of Manheim, Germany, where she grew up, and sunny, dreamy Los Angeles, where she has written so much of her music. The result is indie rock that treads on the gloomy side of pop avenue, with bittersweet melodies awash in reverb and haunted by feedback.
The album title Empty Sea comes from the brother grimm's fairy tale "The True Bride" in which a kidnapped princess must empty a lake with a spoon full of holes. "There were moments when I really doubted myself as i had some blocks, retreating to LA to write really gave me the courage to get the album together, the experience of overcoming doubt made me think about the girl with the spoon".
