New Kinnie Starr Single Out!

7 Jul 2017

Inspired by a recent battle with a car-accident brain injury, Kinnie Starr's new single "We Are Sky" is a powerful secular hymn that recognizes and celebrates the spirit of hope that can conquer despair. Over a looped guitar-lick sample and a lush, languid electro background, the song moves from gentle, delicate rap verses to a glorious, anthemic chorus. Starr makes the point that people who are actively cruel to others are misguiding their energy, blaming others for whatever they feel they lack themselves. Co-written with award-winning record producer, engineer, composer and musician Doug Romanow, the song brings its key message home with the line, "We are all lonely, we are all holy," and the question, "What do you need?"

Because of the damage sustained in her accident, Starr was unable to play instruments on "We Are Sky." In addition to the song, she responds to this loss by speaking to the subjects of "Brain Injury" and "The Power of Kindness" as the guest-host and co-creator of a series of upcoming Tapestry programs on CBC Radio. The episodes explore how our behaviour affects brain physiology: good vibes aid healing while negative attitudes inflame injuries and cloud cognition.
