“...(dips) the listener's toes in a gentle bath of analogue
synths, rolling bass and slinky psychedelic guitars. ...time to
get your feet wet.”
Andy Lee, Exclaim!
...it's become obvious that Warm Waters' unique collection
of electronic influenced songwriting promises to make the band a
major force to be reckoned with in 2004....The band have somehow
tapped into that blurry divider between rock and electronic music,
and effortlessly travel back and forth without going too far in
one direction.
This album is best served chilled, with a little red wine and
hefty portion of passion. Listening to this album is like lying
in the sun on a hazy summer day; its warm, fuzzy analog bliss is
good for whatever ails you. So much variety is packed into this
shiny little disc that I can't see how I'll ever get bored with
it.
...Madrid floats the listener through a voyage of warmth and positivity
(a feeling easily lost in many Korg based bands). The chameleon
quality of Warm Waters allows the album to lend itself
perfectly to almost any environment. I've taken doses while trekking
across the city, chilling with friends and lounging on a Sunday
afternoon –- all with the same tranquil effect.
Madrid's first full length label release is a gorgeous collection
of moods and intergalactic journeys that would easily find a home
on almost any music listener's shelf. The Toronto band's idyllic
marriage of simple guitar melodies, Korg keyboards and synthed-out
vocals creates the perfect non-soundtrack to live to.
The Toronto-based duo are currently working on their next release,
due out 2005. "It's going to be heavier - influenced in part
by our live playing. We want to make more of a 'morning album' as
opposed to a 'night-time' album", Christie says, reflecting
the energy and excitement of a band that simply love what they do.
The water is warm. Come and get your feet wet.
This album is stunning and precise in all aspects. It started off well with an
introduction that I feel not many artists tend to use to their advantage but this is works
well. Madrid gently glides you through 10 tracks of pure sunny beach chill out. They will
definitely be ones to watch for in the future and judging by the talent of this album, they
will achieve much in their musical careers. This is an essential purchase for the fans of
Air and Boards of Canada because most of this album is done in similar fashion. I can’t
wait for the next release from Madrid.
When I opened my eyes I was lying on a beach on a distant planet. The sky was an
ebony-black speckled with the dust of foreign stars, the sea water a deep sapphire
blue, and the sand a pristine sparkle of white. Music was playing in the wind–strange
lulling melodies floating like the smell of the ocean, refreshing and cool.
My toes were gently caressed by the backwash of warm foamy waves, and I followed
the strange vibrations of the sound, my ears stuck in a trance. The music was
Madrid’s Warm Waters, electro-ambient-pop eerily reminiscent of early Air with a
twist, à la Boards of Canada...
It's the sound of Spiritualized dancing underwater, with analog synths and burbling
beats pulsating from the deepest depths, while tranquil guitar slides, stoned-immaculate
melodies and flute flourishes hover at the surface.
Inadvertently or not, Niagara Falls' Madrid appears to draw upon the best of Royksopp,
Air and Manitoba to create a wonderful album conjuring the ambiance of warm vacation nights.
It's truly amazing when electronic music sounds organic and alive, and Madrid, like Manitoba,
simply oozes this vibe.
...Warm Waters catapults forth an array of electronic sounds with vocal interruptions and
nicely placed guitar licks that are sure to send a warm tingly feeling right up your spine.
Hometown electronic heroes Madrid—Duncan Christie and Adam Perry—may receive surprised
awe when visiting the rest of the nation, but not here. In their recent spree of media
attention since the release of Warm Waters, the pair have received raised eyebrows when
revealing they hail from Niagara Falls. It's understandable since music critics from
Canada and beyond are comparing the electronic–dub duo to the likes of Air, Boards of
Canada or early Massive Attack—Madrid's brand of globally sophisticated production and
wide spread musical appeal don't usually hail from an area known more for its grapes
than its groups...
